Functional Capacity Assessment
An Occupational Therapy Functional Capacity Assessment under the NDIS is conducted by an Occupational Therapist (OT) to identify the necessary supports and services for individuals with disabilities to attain their goals and enhance their independence.
This assessment is a thorough examination of the individual's functional capabilities and requirements, considering various aspects of their daily activities across home, work, and community environments.
The practical nature of the assessment involves the OT:
- Engaging the individual in discussions about their goals, strengths, and challenges, while also observing them performing tasks or participating in activities to assess their abilities.
- Reviewing relevant medical records and obtaining information from other professionals, such as doctors or therapists, as necessary.
- Collaborating with the individual, their loved ones, or core support to gain insights into their lived experience of disability.
The assessment may also incorporate:
- The use of standardised tests, including cognitive, mood, movement, sensory, or Activities of Daily Living tests, to better understand the individual's abilities.
Based on the assessment outcomes, the OT compiles a comprehensive report that outlines:
- The individual's current functional status across NDIS-supported domains.
- A plan of therapeutic support, capacity building, and core supports required to help the participant achieve their goals.
This report is likely utilised by the individual, their support coordinator, and NDIS delegate or planner to inform decisions about the most effective and tailored support strategies.
